the big D...

from this morning's kansas city star:
I want to point out here that Dallas is a very fine city known for many things such as, hold on, where’s that tourist guide?

Oh, here it is. Dallas is a very fine city known for many things such as having five I.M. Pei edifices, its famous cheerleaders, headquartering many famous companies like 7-Eleven and for having the No. 1 volume Kia dealer in America. Dallas also has an airport that is “bigger than the Island of Manhattan,” a fun little fact you probably knew if you’ve ever had to change terminals there.
heh...

Yes, changing terminals at DFW is like trying to get across town in Manhattan using public transportation (which usually means the bus). Although it's much easier now with the mono-rail thingy. I'm liking it.

Why is a paper in KC writing about Dallas?

so i live in dallas and this is the first i have heard about the big 12 basketball tournament being here. why is it here anyway? there isn't even a big 12 school in dallas. maybe that is why nobody cared.

Lauren---

The Big 12 tourney is in Dallas because they alternate having it in the 'Big 12 South' vs. in Kansas City for the 'Big 12 North.' It's supposed to be at a 'neutral' site, but in KC you obviously have lots of KU and KSU fans, and in Dallas you have lots of UT and TT and other Texas schools. So it ends up not really being neutral after all. But that's why they alternate years. People care, especially if they went to a Big 12 school and live in Dallas, as I and my husband both used to. Maybe you're just not a big sports fan. Dallas has always been lax at reporting things that didn't relate to professional sports.

Katie -

I was a scholarship athlete (tennis) at a Big 12 school and work with several crazy sports fans - I don't think Dallas marketed the tournament very well because I am usually aware of stuff going on - especially because the coworkers are always talking about it. Last year I even knew about and attended the NCAA Women's Basketball regionals at Reunion Arena. With KU so close to KC - I wouldn't consider it neutral. But Dallas is at least 1.5 hours from the nearest (Baylor) and three or more from the other Big 12 schools. I'm not a big Dallas fan -so I'll blame it on the city. It is a shame, I would hope for the Big 12 tourney that the seats would be packed.
